Abstract:Objective To investigate the optimized protocol for acupuncture treatment of lumbar intervertebral disc herniation.Methods Sixty patients with lumbar intervertebral disc herniation were randomly grouped using a L8(27) orthogonal table with four factors and two levels.The primary and secondary influences of four factors: electroacupuncture,needle insertion depth,distant acupoints and between-treatment intervals on the therapeutic effect of acupuncture were assessed using the VAS and the symptom and sign evaluation scale.The influences of each factor were compared between the two levels and the reciprocal effects of the factors were studied to select the optimum protocol.Results The results of the VAS scoring showed that electroacupuncture,needle insertion depth and distant acupoints were the significant factors influencing the relief of subjective pains in the patients after eight days of treatment.The results of the symptom and sign evaluation scale scoring showed that electroacupuncture,needle insertion depth and time interval were the significant factors influencing the therapeutic effect of acupuncture.Conclusion The optimum protocol within eight days of treatment is deep insertion of needles into lumbar Huatuo jiaji points plus electroacupuncture and distant point acupuncture given once daily.
